San Antonio delivers heartfelt tributes to news of Hispanic Elvis’ death

Hispanic Elvis is likely the most-photographed person in the downtown San Antonio area. With his gold-rimmed aviator sunglasses, red cape, and handmade guitar, the local star was always ready to pose for the camera and meet his fans. It’s those moments that are being pulled out of camera rolls across the city Thursday, March 31 as San Antonio remembers the late Hispanic Elvis.

The Market Square legend, who maintained his anonymity under his rock n’ roll-style moniker, has died, his family confirmed to MySA Thursday. He was hospitalized in January with an esophagus infection and COVID-19. He was released but was then admitted to hospice care earlier in March.

Social media took off the night of Wednesday, March 30 and into Thursday with unconfirmed reports of Hispanic Elvis’ passing. Such posts have been common in recent years. Each time, Hispanic Elvis’ family has had to dispel the posts. Thursday morning was different. Hispanic Elvis’ brother, George Cisneros, confirmed the social media posts were true, Hispanic Elvis had died. Cisneros, understandably upset, says he learned about his loved one’s passing through social media, before his family was able to connect or confirm the news.

While the family is speaking out against the early posts, Cisneros encourages the city to post their remembrances. A GoFundMe online fundraiser is also available for donations.

Soon after the confirmation was shared, the city reacted by sharing their childhood memories, photos, and times they saw Hispanic Elvis dining at Mi Tierra, where he was often seen greeting guests and performing his impromptu dance moves.

Last week, when Hispanic Elvis was in hospice care, Mi Tierra posted a tribute to him.

“He’s been an iconic figure in our restaurants and an important part of the cultural fabric of Market Square,” the restaurant said online.

It’s unclear if the restaurant will organize a tribute to their beloved regular.
