San Antonio City Council to call for Councilman Perry to resign

An agenda for a Monday, November 14, San Antonio City Council meeting includes one item, a no confidence vote calling for the resignation of Councilman Clayton Perry. Body camera footage of Perry released by the San Antonio Police Department on Thursday, November 10, showed him appearing to be inebriated after an alleged hit-and run.
News broke on Tuesday, November 8, of a Sunday evening car accident Perry had allegedly been identified by a witness as having been involved in, as well as reports of him smelling of alcohol. Mayor Ron Nirenberg said Tuesday that the District 10 councilman should resign if the report of the accident was accurate.
A warrant was issued for Perry’s arrest on Thursday and he turned himself in to Bexar County the same day, but was released on a bond. Perry, who has been on City Council since 2017, has been charged with “driving while intoxicated” and “failure to render aid.” The car Perry allegedly hit was heavily damaged, but its occupant was uninjured.
Perry appears to have suffered a laceration to the head during the accident and was found laying on the ground in his backyard while his Jeep was left turned on in his driveway against his closed garage door. The councilman was not arrested and did not have his sobriety tested the night of the accident. A witness followed the jeep to Perry’s home from the site of the accident and reported there was only one occupant in the vehicle.
More than 100 people have signed an online petition calling on Perry to resign, who has said in statement preceding the release of the body camera footage that he would not.
