San Antonio at Portland, Final Score: Blazers pull away from the Spurs 125-117

The Spurs tried to rectify and revitalize their Rodeo Road Trip but came up short.

In a back and forth contest throughout, the good guys ran out of gas late yet again as the Blazers pulled away and won this one behind Damian Lillard’s 26 points. San Antonio was led by Trey Lyles and DeMar DeRozan, who scored 23 and 21, respectively.

Thus far, the Spurs have fallen to 0-3 on their annual Rodeo Road Trip against some quality teams.

Observations

• In another life, Trevor Ariza would have been a Spur and a darn good one too.
• I never get tired of watching the Memorial Day Miracle against the Blazers just like I never get tired of watching Lonnie Walker IV play basketball.
• Trey Lyles came to play tonight! He and Lillard led all scorers with 21 through 3 quarters. His 23 points was a season high (on 9-11 shooting, 4-6 from threee), but even so not a recipe for success against a team that can score like Portland, because…
• LaMarcus Aldridge didn’t have a great night against his former team, with 20 points 9-23 shooting. DeRozan wasn’t as efficient have we’ve grown accustomed to, shooting just 6-16, but he at least went 9-9 on free throws. Aldridge never made it to the stripe.
• A couple of stats that often would leads to wins is the Spurs only committed 4 turnovers the entire night and a 28-12 advantage in free throw attempts, of which they made 25. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for the Spurs overcome a poor shooting night from the stars and a hot night from three from Portland, who hit 18-37 to the Spurs’ 10-28.
• The Spurs actually held Lillard relatively in check after he’d been averaging nearly 50 points over the prior six games. While he only shot 9-20 on the night, it was Carmelo Anthony and Gary Trent Jr. who did most of the damage, combing for 38 points on 10-14 from three.
• The Spurs fell 117-125 tonight or according to the new scoring system for this year’s All-Star game, they lost €56.7 to $75 and 9/4ths.
