Richard Sherman: Faith in 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo ‘wavering’ after blowout loss to Chiefs

Free-agent cornerback and “Thursday Night Football” analyst Richard Sherman has clearly lost some faith in veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo after watching the Kansas City Chiefs defeat the San Francisco 49ers 44-23 on Sunday.

“It’s wavering. No question,” Sherman said on the latest edition of his podcast about his overall belief in Garoppolo, per David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. “I mean, it has to be wavering. But again, they have come back from bigger holes than this. So the finger isn’t just pointed at Jimmy G. It’s everywhere right now.

“If this was a defensive battle like it was in Denver (in Week 3), and the other team only scored 11 points, and you still lost the game, then I’m sure it would be a lot more finger-pointing at Jimmy G. But they were moving the ball on offense. Sure, he missed opportunities when they had to have points when they needed to have points. Those were missed [opportunities]. We have to get people stopped.”

Sherman played for the 49ers from 2018 through the 2020 campaign and predicted on multiple occasions that the club will win Super Bowl LVII in February 2023. That, however, was before Week 1 starting signal-caller Trey Lance suffered a season-ending right ankle injury in Week 2.

Garoppolo completed 25-of-37 pass attempts for 303 yards with two touchdowns and one interception against the Chiefs. According to ESPN stats, the 30-year-old began Monday seventh among eligible quarterbacks with a 95.7 passer rating but was also tied for 23rd with a 41.1 total QBR and was 18th with a 64.3% completion percentage on the season. In six games, Garoppolo has thrown nine touchdown passes and four interceptions.

The 3-4 49ers play at the 3-3 Los Angeles Rams this coming Sunday before Jimmy G and company begin their bye week.
