Report: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Hint At 2023 Quarterback Plans
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have a new starting quarterback in 2023. Tom Brady, who played for the Buccaneers for three seasons, retired from the NFL at 45 years old. The Buccaneers are one of the many teams who are looking for a new quarterback next season. Head coach Todd Bowles was telling offensive coordinator candidates about a player they felt could step in for Brady.
According to Rick Stroud with the Tampa Bay Times, the Buccaneers will let Kyle Trask compete for the starting job next season. The competition comes as the Buccaneers have limited cap space:
“Kyle Trask will get his shot to be the Bucs’ starting quarterback. He has waited without complaint or complacency for two seasons and has earned the opportunity.
That’s what the Bucs told at least several candidates who interviewed for the offensive coordinator job that went to Dave Canales. But they also said they plan to add a veteran or two to compete with the former Florida star.
However, the Bucs are $56.53 million over the $224.8 million salary cap, so they admitted during interviews that money will affect which veteran quarterbacks they can attempt to sign.”
Trask was highly thought of while playing college football at Florida. Trask made second-team All-SEC in 2020. The former Gators quarterback was drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Trask has had an enviable seat the past two seasons in Tampa Bay, getting to watch Brady practice and play. We’ll see if he can use what he learned from Brady to his advantage this offseason.
