Report: 49ers expected to hold onto QB Jimmy Garoppolo until cut-down day
When the San Francisco 49ers take the field for Week 1 on Sept. 11, it’s likely quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo won’t be with them.
However, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the 49ers plan to keep Garoppolo for now.
“It sounds like they’re going to hold onto him as long as possible just to see if any trade market develops before eventually, and likely, moving on from him,” Rapoport said.
While Rapoport said there’s “no clear” trade partner for Garoppolo, things can change between now and the start of the regular season.
The 49ers have until 1 p.m. on Aug. 30 to cut Garoppolo. If not, they’ll be responsible for his $24.2M salary in 2022, which comes with a cap hit of $26.9M.
The 49ers’ NFC West rivals, the Seattle Seahawks, have been linked to Garoppolo. Veteran Geno Smith, and former Denver Broncos signal-caller Drew Lock, are currently battling for the starting job in Seattle.
Garroppolo, who had shoulder surgery in March, began throwing with no restrictions last week. For now, he’s not practicing with the team, only participating in throwing exercises.
