Rams’ Sean McVay expects Cooper Kupp to play vs. Buccaneers after ankle scare

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay expects wide receiver Cooper Kupp to play this coming Sunday at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“I think he’s going to be OK,” McVay told reporters Monday about the right ankle issue Kupp is dealing with coming off Sunday’s 31-14 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, per Sarah Barshop of ESPN. “You guys all know how tough he is, and so, really just kind of managing that swelling. But fortunately, there wasn’t anything structurally wrong, and so that’s very positive news for us.”

As Jeremy Layton noted for the New York Post, Kupp suffered the setback when the Rams were trailing by 17 points with roughly a minute to play in Sunday’s defeat. After the game, McVay admitted he was “kicking” himself for utilizing the All-Pro and reigning Offensive Player of the Year at that stage of what was already a lost matchup.

On Monday, McVay confessed he wishes he would’ve run a different play and not left Kupp “exposed to that hit” with the contest out of reach. Fortunately, tests have shown the superstar 29-year-old has just “a little lateral soft-tissue swelling in that ankle.”

Kupp recorded eight catches for 79 yards and a touchdown in the loss to San Francisco that dropped the Rams to 3-4 on the season heading into the Week 9 showdown at the 3-5 Buccaneers. Per ESPN stats, Kupp began Monday second in the league with 64 receptions and 84 targets, fifth with 686 receiving yards, and tied for fourth with five touchdown receptions on the campaign.
