Raiders owner Mark Davis makes large donation to Uvalde school district

After the recent tragedy, Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis is giving a large amount of money to the Uvalde school district.

The Uvalde Leader-News reported this morning that Davis and the Raiders organization made a donation totaling one million dollars. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer mentioned that former Raiders player Vann McElroy had been engaged in talks. McElroy himself grew up in Uvalde. McElroy played with the Silver and Black from 1982 to 1990. He was a two-time Pro Bowler and a member of the team’s last Super Bowl-winning squad.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk elaborated further on the story, in particular, the connection between McElroy, the Raiders, and Uvalde itself.

“The story explains that the donation was sparked by conversations between team owner Mark Davis and former Raiders safety (and retired NFL agent) Vann McElroy, who grew up in Uvalde and resides there now.”

It goes to show you the type of person that Davis is. The Raiders have no real ties to that Texas community, but in spite of that, they’re at the forefront of trying to help Uvalde following recent events. The school shooting that took place rocked the nation. It has once again brought the issue of gun control to the forefront. The media often chooses to only depict Davis in a comedic manner, as an owner that’s out of his league. However, Davis and the Raiders are once again showing their true colors as they’ve stepped up in a major way. No matter where you end up in the gun control debate, it’s refreshing to see a sports franchise take an active role in trying to at least help the situation.
