Raiders Free Agency: 3 Safeties That Should Be Targeted

When NFL free agency kicked off in March, the Las Vegas Raiders had some positions they needed to improve on quickly, and they moved swiftly to address those issues.

Will the Las Vegas Raiders keep Johnathan Abram beyond 2022?

The Raiders are fresh off their second playoff berth since 2003, and with a new coaching staff in place, this team seems poised to make postseason trips a consistent event. One position that will need attention is the safety position. They have first-round pick Johnathan Abram, but his missteps on the field and durability questions make him a possible candidate to not stick around past 2022.

Regardless of whether Abram stays or goes, there are some options for the Raiders could look to bring in to help solidify the secondary. Following the initial free agent wave and NFL Draft, here are some players still available that could be looked at.

Raiders Target No. 1 – Andrew Sendejo

No, this is not, in any way, a splashy move, but he is a player with experience who, if nothing else, could provide some valuable experience to the young secondary. The safety market has dried up some, and if they just need someone who can provide some depth and energy, they may give Sendejo a call.

Raiders Target No. 2 – Tashaun Gipson

He’s a veteran with a knack for turnovers. I remind you that the free-agent pieces left are not very flashy, but Gipson would be a wealth of experience and his ability to get interceptions would be a big key for the defense. Gibson did miss games last season, so that could be the cause of hesitancy, but he is still young and if he’s available to play, he could definitely be an option worth looking at.

Raiders Target No. 3. – Jaquiski Tartt

Tartt may be most recently known for his dropped interception in the NFC championship game, which helped the Rams go on and win. Tartt has been a solid player for the 49ers and has always seemed like he could break out for them. The biggest question for Tartt has been his health, as only twice has he played 15 games in a season, with the last one being in 2016. If healthy and available, maybe a change of scenery and playing with a youthful group could spur Tartt into a big season and, in turn, help the Raiders.
