Quarterback Baker Mayfield Disses Previous Teams; Suggests He Was ‘Handcuffed’

Baker Mayfield Disses Previous Teams

In a recent interview, Mayfield offered praise to the Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Dave Canales and in the process, threw his previous teams under the bus.

“[Canales] gives us the keys eventually to be able to check things at the line of scrimmage and have answers,” Mayfield said about what he experienced practicing under the coordinator. “You know, you’re not handcuffed at the line of scrimmage.”

He never really offered what the “handcuffed” term meant but it’s clear that the relationship between him and the previous head coaches soured pretty quickly. The Browns looked to be figuring out how to use Mayfield but then traded for Deshaun Watson. Mayfield was quickly moved and the rest is history.

Prove It Year

If what Baker Mayfield is saying is true then this is a prove it year for him. He has the weapons around him. Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are a great receiving pair and the offensive line should be improved. The offseason seems to be going well and if Mayfield can make the correct reads at the line of scrimmage, he could be in for a monster year according to himself. If he were to have a huge season it would give merit to his comments.

It is going to be very difficult for Baker Mayfield to convince critics that it was all on the previous teams’ head coaches. He has the weapons and is excited about how he will be utilized in Tampa Bay. For Mayfield, this may be his last chance to prove that he can be a starting quarterback in the NFL.
