Police: Richard Sherman’s father-in-law used pepper spray during altercation

More news has surfaced surrounding Richard Sherman’s arrest. 

According to the police report (h/t The Associated Press), Sherman’s father-in-law, Raymond Moss, armed himself with a handgun and shot pepper spray at the former All-Pro cornerback during a domestic dispute. 

Moss was trying to protect his family as Sherman was attempted to break down the door to enter his in-laws’ house. Moss told police that the former San Francisco 49ers star partially broke in the door by repeatedly hitting it with his shoulder. 

“The family began to yell in fear,” Moss told police officers. “I used pepper spray on Sherman’s face through the partially opened door as he was still banging and attempting to gain entry. I told him to stop. I armed myself with my handgun at this time fearing for the safety of myself and my family.”

A 911 call obtained by KIRO revealed concerning details leading to Sherman’s arrest. The 33-year-old’s wife, Ashley Moss, could be heard telling the dispatcher that her husband was drunk and had threatened to commit suicide. She added that Sherman was being aggressive and got physical with a family member. 

Sherman is being investigated for two incidents that occurred Wednesday. Police received a report of a possibly impaired driver in the early morning hours on July 14. The driver of the vehicle, which is registered to Sherman, crashed into a construction site before driving off and abandoning the car about a mile away. 

Police then received a call about a burglary in progress. They approached Sherman and told him he was being arrested, at which point he tried to leave. A police dog was used to help arrest Sherman as he became combative with officers. 

After news of the arrest was revealed, Sherman’s wife said in a statement to the Seattle Times that nobody was hurt, adding, “He’s a good person and this is not his character.”

The NFLPA released a statement Wednesday saying it was aware of the arrest and will continue to monitor the situation.
