Police: Man walking home from work killed by hit-and-run driver in Helotes

Police are searching for the driver of a pickup truck that struck and killed a pedestrian in Helotes.

Jerry Sanchez, 36, was walking on the 13700 block of State Highway 16, near Helotes Elementary, on Dec. 10 around 8:26 p.m.

A pickup truck traveling southbound toward Loop 1604 hit Sanchez and did not stop after the collision, police said. Sanchez, thrown off the road, was not found until 7 a.m. the following morning.

Detectives have video of the truck seconds before the impact, according to Duane McGuire of the Helotes Police Department. Cameras did not capture the collision itself but it can be heard off screen.

The truck appears to be a black Ram 2500 or 3500 with yellow clearance lights and Mopar brand headlights.

“Those aren’t your everyday lights,” McGuire said. “You can’t go to AutoZone or O’Reilly’s to pick up those kind of headlights.”

Sanchez worked at a pipe fitting company less than a mile from where he was killed. That night, he had just gotten off work and began walking home.

Police believe the right front-end of the truck will have damage. They think it turned around and headed northbound soon after the collision.

Anyone with information on the truck is asked to call Helotes police at 210-695-5933.
