Player Ratings: Mahrez shines but Havertz struggles as Man City thrash Chelsea in FA Cup

Manchester City heaped more misery onto Chelsea manager Graham Potter on Sunday as they dominated in a 4-0 win in the third round of the FA Cup.

Riyad Mahrez netted a brace, including a fine free-kick, while World Cup winner Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden were also on the scoresheet in an easy victory for Pep Guardiola’s side as Blues forward Kai Havertz struggled.

City will now face either Oxford United or Arsenal in the fourth round, while Chelsea will have to make vast improvements if they are to regain any form of pride this season. Below, Sportsmail’s Chris Wheeler (ratings) and Lewis Browning (explanations) rate both teams’ players after the game.

Man City 

Stefan Ortega He could’ve set up a deckchair if he wanted to. Called into action once with his hands but looked comfortable with his feet, as you have to be in a City team. 6

Kyle Walker Had the chance to captain the side and got 90 minutes after his early withdrawal on Thursday. Great run to assist Foden. 7

Manuel Akanji Strong performance at centre half and complemented Laporte well. Like the other defenders, rarely tested. 6.5

Aymeric Laporte  A stroll in the park on his return to fitness. He probably couldn’t have wished for an easier game. 7

Sergio Gomez  Finally got his chance at full-back and impressed. Could be used more in the league. 6

Rodri Simple but effective as always. Will be frustrated to have been booked, but he makes it look easy. 7

Bernardo Silva Another positive showing in central midfield, orchestrating play. A moment of class to feed Foden, who then won the second penalty. 6.5

Phil Foden Looked at home centrally, which is where many fans have been crying out for him to play. Will be pleased with minutes in the bank after limited opportunities post-World Cup. 7

Riyad Mahrez  A truly sensational free kick to open the scoring and was allowed to cut inside repeatedly by Chelsea. Penalty will do him the world of good – looks City’s best option on the right. 8

Cole Palmer Didn’t stand out and missed a good chance early on but it’s clear why City rate him so highly. Linked play well, and will enjoy more minutes as time goes on. 6

Julian Alvarez  Continues to play with a smile on his face, and why wouldn’t he? Looked confident as anything to slot the penalty away and was unlucky not to pick up a second. 6.5

Kalvin Phillips (Rodri 58) More minutes in the bank as he tries to win over his manager. 6

Joao Cancelo (Gomez 59) Suddenly finds himself out of favour but will be called on again. 6

Subs not used: Ederson, Stones, Ake, Gundogan, Haaland, De Bruyne.

Manager – Pep Guardiola Didn’t have the hardest task in the world but allowed his team to dominate proceedings without overthinking the occasion and was able to rest key players. 7

Chelsea 

Kepa Arrizabalaga Was left exposed by his defence and probably should have got to Alvarez’ penalty but had little chance with the other strikes. 5

Trevoh Chalobah Hung out to dry slightly at right-back and but did his best up against Palmer, Foden and Gomez. He’ll have better days. 5

Bashir Humphreys Looked like the senior man in Chelsea’s back four despite being on professional debut. Wasn’t afraid to get stuck in and can be proud of his performance. 5.5

Kalidou Koulibaly Looked all at sea once again and was uncomfortable on the ball and off it. Had to be looked after by a youngster on debut and gave away a brainless penalty. 4.5

Lewis Hall Had some nice touches but was overwhelmed by the quality of City’s attack and Mahrez in particular. He’ll be fine. 6

Jorginho Looked like an ageing midfielder waiting to leave the club. Was completely over-run in midfield and Chelsea are probably better off without him right now. 5.5

Mateo Kovacic A very good player but he can’t do it on his own. Taken off early to protect him more than anything after playing plenty of minutes recently. 5

Conor Gallagher Probably his worst performance in a Chelsea shirt. Found himself ball-watching on occasion to put his team in trouble and picked up yet another rash yellow card. 6

Hakim Ziyech Again failed to show his international form at club level and also hooked early. A move away surely beckons soon. 5.5

Mason Mount Good for the side that he’s returned from injury but he didn’t get a look in. Almost completely anonymous. 5

Kai Havertz Looked disinterested and failed to lead the line again. Incredibly bizarre handball and rightly hooked by Potter. 4

David Datro Fofana (Havertz 46) Had a couple of touches on debut but didn’t get a sniff of service. 6

Denis Zakaria (Kovacic 46) He and Kovacic are by far the best two midfielders Chelsea have fit. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta (Jorginho 63) Booted the ball at the advertising boards in frustration at one point and no one can blame him. A long-serving player is watching the walls fall down in front of his eyes. 6

Omari Hutchinson (Ziyech 63) Generally struggled but did find himself in some good attacking positions. Will come again. 6

Carney Chukwuemeka (Mount 73) Unlucky not to start but struggled to make an impact when he came on. 6

Subs not used: Bettinelli, Badiashile, Silva, Cucurella.

Manager – Graham Potter Not entirely his fault Chelsea find themselves in the predicament they’re in but will need results fast with fans already losing patience. If he were working under the previous regime, he may have already lost his job. 5

Referee – Robert Jones Missed an obvious handball for the first penalty but got the second spot on. Didn’t have too many tough calls to make. 7
