Possibly, the most talked about young English footballer of all-time.

Even before making his Manchester City debut in November 2017, Phil Foden has been hyped up as England’s next great midfield genius.

A month earlier, he’d helped England win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in India, winning the tournament’s Golden Ball award, and scoring a brace in the final.

Ever since, there’s been hope that Foden could help end England’s wait for major silverware at senior level.

For his club, Foden has won three Premier League titles, the FA Cup, four Carabao Cups and two Community Shields.

But, it’s only in the last year or so that he’s established himself as one of the first names on Pep Guardiola’s team sheet.

This season, he’s made 50 appearances, scoring 16 times with a further ten assists.

Foden’s performances have resulted in a general zeitgeist that he has to start for England at Euro 2020.

That said, Gareth Southgate has hardly used the midfielder to date. In his national team career so far, Foden has made six appearances with his two goals both coming against Iceland in the UEFA Nations League in November.

The England boss generally opts for more conservative players – such as Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson – in the middle, whilst Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho have looked to be ahead of Foden when it comes to being deployed out wide under Southgate.

However, we expect to see Foden’s number of international caps and number of goals rise during Euro 2020 in a breakthrough international competition for the young English maestro.
