Phil Foden has been ruled out of England’s opening Nations League clash after missing out on their final training session after testing positive for Covid.

The 22-year-old, who has been nominated for the PFA’s Young Player of the Year award, will miss out on the Three Lions game against Hungary in Budapest on Saturday evening after leaving the camp through illness.

The Manchester City star trained with the squad for the rest of the week, but was nowhere to be seen at St George’s Park on Friday, as boss Gareth Southgate prepared for the Nations League tie.

Despite missing the first month of the season with an injury he picked up with England at Euro 2020, Foden registered nine goals and five assists for Pep Guardiola’s Premier League-winning side this season.

The attacking midfielder will be a loss to Southgate’s squad although the England boss has plenty of options in the likes of Jack Grealish, Sterling and Jarrod Bowen that could fill that void.

Foden is expected to return to the England camp once the team returns from Germany to feature against Italy next weekend.

Southgate said: ‘Phil Foden has tested positive for Covid so he has had to leave.

‘Hopefully he will be able to meet up when we come back from Germany. It depends on his symptoms and how his breathing is. It affects everyone differently.’

Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori also missed England training due to injury and will not be available for the Hungary clash, while Raheem Sterling is a doubt having missed some training sessions.

The centre-backs have reportedly not trained all week due to minor injuries, but continue to work individually away from the squad.

They are, however, expected to play some part in England’s four Nations League games.
