Kevin De Bruyne has been told to go back to basics in a bid to make sure Manchester City’s season ends in success.

City can reach the Champions League quarter-finals for a sixth consecutive year should they progress beyond RB Leipzig on Tuesday night as expectations in Europe remain sky high.

De Bruyne was replaced against Newcastle United last week before being named on the bench at Crystal Palace on Saturday, with Pep Guardiola demanding more of his talisman.

‘It’s been a difficult season for all of us, me included, with the World Cup and everything,’ Guardiola said. ‘I’d like to see the principles, an incredible ability to see passes and make assists, but I like to think he will get better with the simple things.

‘Do them better, when he does that the rest will come. It’s like with Erling [Haaland]. I don’t want him to just score, I want him involved more in the game.

‘Kevin is the same. In the right moment, move outside, inside, attack the channels, and find those incredible passes that only he can find.’

De Bruyne has been named on the bench for three of the last seven Premier League matches, with the 31-year-old having played down concerns over his recent form.

He maintains that critics set different standards for him and pointed towards favourable statistics in creating chances this term.

‘I know how it is. When you’re 18, 19 you notice these things a lot more and you know where it comes from,’ De Bruyne said.

‘When people talk about form and how people play, it’s give and take. I know how to manage that. I don’t know how long I’m going to play. As long as I’m having fun I will play football.

‘Obviously there will be a day where it will end but I’m not able to think about that yet. I’m a perfectionist.’
