Open Thread: Spurs’ legend David Robinson honored for his continued support of education

The Admiral’s involvement with Carver Academy and IDEA Public Schools has shaped San Antonio

Our beloved #50 David Robinson was recognized by the Kelly Cares Foundation on Monday night as he received the “Leadership in Education Award” for his contributions toward equality in education throughout San Antonio.

His sons presented the award to the NBA Hall of Fame center.

“I have been working for the last 25 years to provide a better educational opportunity for low-income families. We simply must do a better job providing a quality education to all of our children, regardless of income level.”

On a semi-unrelated story, Marilyn Dubinski posted an Open Thread asking Pounders to share their encounters with Spurs players.

A couple of years ago I was sitting at Los Barrios with my family when David Robinson walked in. He was cordial with everyone before he was shown to his table. Moments later he was seated right next to us. He continued to greet people who stopped by to offer their respects and share their admiration. He was engaging his guest in conversation about San Antonio and specifically about his role in education.

Robinson spoke with such eloquence and conviction about his belief in what he was doing. It was great just to hear what he was saying.

I didn’t speak to him though my family supported the idea. I chose to leave him to his conversation and dinner in relative peace. But it was great to be a fly on the wall and hear one of my heroes speak so highly of my hometown.
