Open Thread: Spurs “Homecoming”

For those of you fortunate enough to attend Wednesday night’s game, you know the theme was Homecoming. As in a high school homecoming, complete with marching band, homecoming king, and photo opportunities. The non-game theatrics involving everyone’s favorite mascot The Coyote kept the audience entertained throughout the evening.

But it was really about bringing everyone back to the AT&T Center to kick off what has the potential to be a majestic year of NBA basketball.

After the mounting uncertainty behind the inability to lock Lonnie Walker IV into an extension, it was great to see him to take to center court before tip off to greet the crowd. The role, once filled by Patty Mills, went to the Spurs player whose community service and worldview most mirror the Aussie. Class and the Spurs Way were not lacking.

The night also started with a Por Vida video narrated by San Antonio native Shea Serrano.

As always, the fandom was in full effect.

And, of course, the highlight of the night was watching the Spurs shine. Devin Vassell stole the night, Dejounte Murray took the helm with aplomb, and a late night arena call for Josh Primo made the Spurs guard the youngest collegiate draftee in history to play in an NBA game. He hit a three that nearly took the roof off the place.

There will be much more to come as the season unfolds. Hopefully the AT&T center will continue its move to normalcy and add back music, postgame parties, and food trucks.

For now, it’s good to be back home again.
