Open Thread: Some former Spurs participating in Las Vegas Summer League

The NBA is a fluid league. Teams are constantly rebuilding, players are on the move. The mobility of the league pours over even more during Summer League as fringe NBA players, G-League regulars, and international hopefuls join undrafted and players hoping to work their way back into the big game.

Watching the Summer League games creates a special of “hey, I know that guy,” scenario, even if you limit your NBA viewing to all things Spurs.

Quinndary Weatherspoon

In addition to purging trading, or losing Patty Mills, DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay, Gordui Dieng, and Trey Lyles, 2019 draftee Quinndary Weatherspoon found himself looking for a home after exhausting the maximum of two two-way contracts with the Spurs. He is currently playing for the Brooklyn Nets while in Las Vegas alongside former Mississippi State teammate Reggie Perry.

Weatherspoon to Brooklyn is not that farfetched as the Nets GM Sean Marks has a great relationship with the San Antonio Spurs (he won two championships with the Silver & Black) and as mentioned yesterday, the Nets have former Spurs players in their coaching and development departments. If he signs, Weatherspoon will be the only San Antonio transplant this summer. Patty Mills recently agreed to a $12M/2-year contract in the borough.

Chimezie Metu

Another former Spurs player who was drafted in the 49th spot hoping to make waves in Summer League is Chimezie Metu. Metu signed with the Sacramento Kings last season and played sparingly. But as Sactown Royalty (the Kings version of Pounding The Rock) writer Leo Tochterman observed, Metu’s participation in Summer League may be designed to capitalize on his late season play and earn him more minutes this season:

“Chimezie Metu was pretty solid for the Kings during his 488 minutes with the team last season. Most of those minutes came towards the latter part of the season, but Metu showed some really solid offensive skill for a guy that entered the season on a two-way contract before getting signed to a guaranteed deal later in the season.

Metu made 13 of his 37 3-point attempts with the Kings last season, which was a pretty impressive number albeit on a low number of attempts. Metu further proved his 3-point-shooting ability this summer playing with Nigeria during the Olympics.

On a team like the Kings that is in dire need of some shooting from the big man position, Metu has the chance to prove he is the stretch big that the Kings currently lack.

Against the talent he will see in the coming weeks, Metu should be able to really showcase his value to the Kings going forward and prove that his late-season performance was not just legitimate but a sign of something more.”

London Perrantes

In the first outing for the Spurs in Sin City, they faced the Minnesota Timberwolves and a familiar face in London Perrantes. Perrantes participated with the Spurs in the 2019 Summer League and was a member of the Austin Spurs in the truncated Orlando G-League bubble last season.

Khyri Thomas

Khyri Thomas may be a little more obscure a Spurs connection as he only played seven games in Austin this past season, but he did average 45.7% shooting from beyond the arc, the fourth-highest 3-point percentage considering his limited time. He is with the Houston Rockets who are in a straight up rebuild. Thomas could be a player to watch as the week’s festivities linger on.

Amida Brimah

Amida Brimah is on the Summer roster with the Indiana Pacers. Brimah averaged 7.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.75 blocks over his two seasons with the Austin Spurs. He was part of the 2018 G-League Championship. Brimah also played in the Spurs 2018 Summer League roster.

Ben Moore

Ben Moore, the 2017-2018 Spurs two-way contract player, also joined the Spurs in Summer League in 2019. Moore is currently playing on the Memphis Grizzlies Summer League roster.

Daulton Hommes

After going undrafted in 2019, New Orleans Pelicans Vegas acquisition Daulton Hommes played with the Austin Spurs for a season before playing overseas. He averaged 8.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in just under 20 minutes per game.

Keep your eyes open as the Las Vegas Summer League continues. There are Spurs influences everywhere.
