Open Thread: Pop’s coaching tree continues with Will Sevening

Will Sevening, while technically not an assistant coach, deserves credence among the Silver & Black faithful. As a member of Pop’s bench since 1998, the athletic trainer has gleaned exceptional insight into the Spurs way while participating in some of the franchise’s greatest moments.

From 1992-1998 Sevening worked for the Indiana Pacers. He spent his first two seasons as an intern before moving into assistant athletic trainer.

Since joining the Spurs, Will has been there for all five titles. He has also served as an athletic trainer for the 2019 USA Basketball National Team and 2019 FIBA World Cup in China. He was one of two athletic trainers selected to attend to the USA Basketball National Team at the 2003 FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Puerto Rico.

Sevening has also been involved in the 2005 NBA All Star Game as third athletic trainer as well as 2016 NBA All Star Game as the Western Conference head athletic trainer.

Along with Pop, the Spurs cling to few long-term mainstays from the early dynasty era. Will begins his twenty-fourth season in San Antonio this week. That should be reassuring to those of us who cringe at too much change.
