Open Thread: Initial thoughts on the coaches challenge and how it will impact the 2019-2020 season

Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports

One week into the season and the newest NBA adjustment is under scrutiny.

Last July, Marilyn Dubinski reported on the adoption of the “coaches challenge” for the 2019-202 season.

The Spurs have experienced the newest rule first hand as Washington Wizards’ head coach Scott Brooks used the new tool to attempt to have a call reversed with 3:17 left in the 4th quarter; the end result was a foul against LaMarcus Aldridge.

And before the Portland Trail Blazers blew into town, they stole a game in Dallas utilizing the coach’s challenge on a call that has quickly become controversial. Without showing the attending fans the video leading to the overturning of the call, the game ended with some head-scratching.

It even brought the ire of Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

Even Gregg Popovich looked ready to make a challenge when CJ McCollum knocked the ball out of bounds with just over seven seconds remaining. The original call gave the ball to the Trail Blazers, but there was no evidence that Trey Lyles made any contact as the carom floated out-of-bounds. That said, the officials looked at it anyway without Pop needing the challenge and still did not side with the Spurs head coach.

With the rule in its early stage of usage, it may take a while to work out the kinks and see the most useful and/or utilized versions. But make no mistake, these challenges will be employed to change the outcomes of games.

What are your initial thoughts on the coach’s challenge?
