Open Thread: Gregg Popovich- “Tell LeBron James and Anthony Davis to play more defense”

The Sports Rush shared out an article last week. Last season Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich sent 3-and-D stalwart Danny Green a message to share with his Los Angeles Lakers teammates: “Tell LeBron and AD to play some more defense.”

Apparently, Pop’s banter with the Akron, Ohio great is not only limited to court side ribbing before and after games.

Given Green’s years with the Spurs, the passing on of a joke was most likely well received. Unfortunately for Green, he was traded along with the draft rights to Jaden McDaniels to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Dennis Schröder. A month later, Green Terrance Ferguson and Vincent Poirier were sent to Philadelphia in exchange for Al Horford.

The 76ers continue logging hours with three-point assassins. In the past few seasons they’ve had J.J. Redick and Marco Belinelli to keep defenses honest. How Green fares in the Eastern Conference will depend greatly on how well he hits from beyond the arc. His last season’s 36.7% with the Lakers could send Green into an earlier retirement than he hopes.

No matter. Here’s to hoping that Pop’s message goes unattended tonight as the Lakers head into the AT&T Center for the first of two games over the next three days.
