Open Thread: ESPN hatin’ on the Spurs during the suspension

With no games to play, the network is bringing back past Finals

We all know it, we all lived through it. No sense rehashing it. But then, there’s nothing else on TV.

Last night ESPN revisited Games 6 and 7 of the 2013 NBA Finals.

Just to recap: the Spurs have won five NBA Championships out of six trips to the Finals. And up until the last moments of Game 6, the Spurs appeared to have it all sewn up.

If you were going to pick any two games that absolutely no Spurs fan would want to watch, these would be they.

And last night they aired back-to-back. And there I was, like a deer in headlights. All over again. Just like 2013 when my wife, then eight months pregnant, was making every attempt to get the antennae on our TV at the right angle that the incoming flights to LaGuardia would stop interrupting the feed.

Of course everything from Ray Allen’s corner 3 until the end of Game 7 has been embedded in my mind. But there was much more than the downfall of Game 6 and the pace of Game 7.

But I guess it wasn’t all bad. It was, after all, at the end of Game 7 that I stood in my small Brooklyn living room and professed that we were indeed moving to San Antonio, that the Spurs would return the following year to meet the Miami Heat, and that the Silver & Black would win the championship so that I could forever point out that team to my then unborn daughter that understated players, team loyalty, and San Antonio culture trumped the “right now” superstar/superteam mobility mentality that (in my mind) had ruined basketball.

How appropriate then that when the Spurs won the 2014 NBA Championship I was standing in my San Antonio living room, holding my daughter, on Father’s Day.

It made that day the “sweetest”. And I know I am not the only one who agrees.
