Open Thread: Determining what will become of Bryn Forbes

The former Michigan Spartan’s contract is up at the end of this season.

Jeff McDonald posted a great piece about Bryn Forbes. He discussed Forbes’ late night workouts and the determination he is building upon facing free agency.

As fans who watch the Fox Sports telecast, we already knew Forbes spent a lot of time this summer working out. Apparently, that has not changed as the undrafted shooting guard is still working out into the night.

Forbes is up for a new contract in free agency this summer and the question has to be asked- will Bryn Forbes be in a Spurs jersey next season?

Forget discussions about redundancies in skill sets between he and Patty Mills. Bryn is a favorite of head coach Gregg Popovich. We’ve seen what happens when you are not on Pop’s wish list (adios, DeMarre Carroll) as opposed to when the best coach in the NBA wants you.

That said, Pop has tended to let money get in the way of retention. Signing a team-friendly contract on the night free agency opens will assure you a roster spot, but take a meeting and almost any offer better will send you packing. If you don’t believe me, ask Aron Baynes, Boban Marjanovic, or Kyle Anderson.

The question is whether other teams will value Forbes as much as the Spurs have. How many other NBA teams would start an undersized guard with defensive flaws? In the era of basketball where the three is king, Forbes might find a few suitors. There is a place for the Seth Currys and Yogi Ferrells, but will the paycheck be worth a move?

Could Forbes shun it all and take the first offer the Spurs make? He has admitted to loving San Antonio. He’s embedding himself in the culture, his family is here, his kids go to school here. He has a life.

It’s been a while since I’ve done it, but I am going to poll this one out.
