NFL Rumors: Deshaun Watson Suspension, Deebo Samuel Contract

Welcome to the Thursday evening edition of NFL rumors on Full Press Coverage.

The NFL offseason clock slowly ticks as training camps across the league are still weeks away from opening. However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of news and rumors to dissect.

One of the biggest stories of the offseason continues to evolve and that is the Deshaun Watson legal situation. Recently, all but four of Watson’s accusers settled their claims out of court, opening the door for a potential conclusion of the legal process in the near future. However, that does not mean he issues with the league disciplinary committee will be ending any time soon.

Lets dive into the latest NFL rumors circulation around the league.

Deshaun Watson Suspension – Talks Between NFL/NFLPA Break?

Rumor: Talks between the NFL and NFLPA on a potential Deshaun Watson suspension have occurred but reportedly “fell apart”, according to Josina Anderson.

Cleveland Browns quarterback may skirt significant legal ramifications for his actions following the financial settlement he recently reached with a majority of his accusers, however, he is likely to avoid discipline under the NFL’s Personal Conduct policy. There is no doubt that Watson will miss games in 2022 and the issue during negotiations between the league and NFLPA centered around the length of the suspension, according to Anderson.

Given the NFL’s poor track record on doling out discipline, the total number may be underwhelming and unsatisfactorily for many NFL fans. Throughout this process, it has been hard to imagine the league issuing anything less than a double-digit suspension, however, given that they have already begun negotiating with Watson and the NFLPA, that may be the best-case scenario at this point.

Could a new contract for 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel be in the works?

Rumor: Appearing on the Bussin’ with the Boys Podcast, 49ers tight end George Kittle says he expects Deebo Samuel contract in the coming weeks.

Not quite the traditional rumor, however, George Kittle made reference to his and Fred Warner‘s new contracts coming late in the offseason and the 49ers inability to get anything of value for this season if they trade Deebo Samuel at this point.

Now, logically, it makes sense. The NFL Draft is long gone and the market seems to have cooled over the last few weeks for Samuel. Ultimately, a contract extension may not get done but it does look more and more likely that Samuel will be a member of the 49ers for the 2022 season. Something that seemed unlikely at the start of the new league year back in March.
