NFC South outfit wants to ‘get something done’ with Carr

After being released by the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this winter, quarterback Derek Carr received immediate interest from across the NFL. The New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers and New York Jets have already held in-person meetings with the four-time Pro Bowler and it appears that one of those suitors might be ready to take the plunge for in the very near future.

Appearing on The Official Jets Podcast, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN disclosed that the Saints want to “get something done” with Carr and are ready to sign him whenever fits best for his timeline.

New Orleans attempted to acquire Carr before he was released by Las Vegas, but because the veteran signal-caller did not want to restructure his contract, the trade fell through and the quarterback received the axe.

The Saints’ aggressive approach to Carr is completely in lockstep with the organization philosophy of keeping their short-term contention window open for as long as possible. Carr would outwardly appear to be the team’s most reliable quarterbacking option since Drew Brees should team and player enter into a contract.

All that said, signing Carr immediately will be a bit challenging for New Orleans. The Saints are currently $30.9 million over the 2023 NFL salary cap, meaning they would need to restructure multiple contracts and release several players before they would have the runway to land Carr’s metaphorical plane.

With the Panthers expressing interest in re-signing Sam Darnold and the Jets still prioritizing a trade for Aaron Rodgers, the Saints do seem to be in position to swing, assuming financials and such can be worked out.
