Newcastle will reportedly launch fresh attempts to sign James Maddison in the summer despite Manchester City holding a strong interest in the Leicester midfielder.

The Magpies lodged two bids, worth £35million and £40million, for the England star last summer but their offers did not come close to matching Leicester’s valuation of around £60million.

And although the Saudi-backed club have been happy to spend, Eddie Howe’s side will face stiff competition from Man City – as revealed by Sportsmail last week.

The champions, who have been charged by the Premier League over alleged financial rule breaches, will have to be active ahead of next season, with the futures of Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva up in the air.

Maddison has less than 18 months of his £100,000-a-week contract left with the Foxes and is yet to pen a new deal.

The uncertainty around Maddison’s future has prompted Newcastle to renew their attempts to sign the highly-rated attacking midfielder at the end of the season, according to the Northern Echo.

The midfielder, who has just returned from injury, has notched eight in 15 league appearances this term after chipping in with a creditable 12 last year.

But Leicester are increasingly unlikely to be able to hold on to Maddison in the summer, even if they avoid relegation.

Newcastle have shown willingness to be patient in the past, securing both Sven Botman and Anthony Gordon after previous failed attempts.

Eddie Howe is keen to recruit in central midfield after failing to find one in the January market.

Newcastle failed to bring in the likes of Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher and Manchester United’s Scott McTominay and with the sale of Jonjo Shelvey, they have been left with just four central midfielders.

Howe said last week that ‘I don’t think this window has been perfect for us’, and he admitted on Friday: ‘Losing Jonjo has been a concern for us. We have had a lot of discussions internally.

‘We were active in the market but we didn’t manage to get a midfielder over the line.’
