Newcastle “highly unlikely” to spend throwing move for Arsenal’s Joe Willock into serious doubt

Newcastle want Willock

Joe Willock enjoyed a stellar season on loan in the northeast at Newcastle.

He scored 8 goals in the league, including a run which equalled that of Alan Shearer, and helped the side stay in the Premier League.

Naturally, Steve Bruce spoke of his desire to try and keep him at the club next season. Joking that he had arguably done more than required and therefore increasing his value to a worrying level.

“Joe’s done too well. It’s a double-edged sword because of him probably doing too well but let’s see what happens. We’ll see over the summer if we can test their resolve,” he said.

Mikel Arteta has reiterated that the contract he has with the club means that he going to be there next season however.

“For sure, because he’s got a contract and he’s going to be here.”

Figures which have been banded around for the England youth international have reached that of £30 million in some cases.

Newcastle ‘unlikely’ to spend

Should the Magpies want Willock they will need to pay the money.

However, The Price of Football podcast host Kieran Maguire has said it is ‘highly unlikely’ that Mike Ashley will spend on the club this summer.

I think it’s highly unlikely that Mike Ashley will spend money on Newcastle and as far as he’s concerned, the club is in the Premier League and has been now for four years without spending a lot of money,” said Maguire.

Newcastle have seen some significant investment into players such as Calum Wilson, Jamal Lewis, Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin. However, they still struggled to remain in the Premier league and were it not for the arrival and goals of Joe Willock they may not have made it.

Ashley has been under pressure from the fan base to invest more in the squad, but whilst they have Premier League status it appears unlikely that serious funds will be made available.

Whether Newcastle end up formalising their interest with a bid looks some way off right now.
