New U.S. 281 lanes opening Saturday

Two new lanes on the remodeled U.S. 281 are scheduled to open Saturday evening.

They run northbound from Loop 1604 to south of Evans Road and will be joined by the opening of the exit ramp to Sonterra Boulevard from the northbound lanes.

Motorists traveling on northbound U.S. 281 headed to Redland Road or Encino Rio will need to use the newly opened exit ramp to Sonterra Boulevard, as the new northbound 281 main lanes will give drivers an express route past Encino Rio without additional exits.

South of Evans Road, after Encino Rio, the northbound main lanes will then merge back with the frontage road. If drivers miss the Sonterra Boulevard exit ramp, they can use the north- to southbound turnaround at Evans Road as an alternate route to Encino Rio or back to Redland Road.

More openings are planned within the next two months, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

During July, the southbound U.S. 281 flyover ramps to east- and westbound Loop 1604 are scheduled to open, followed by the August opening of the Redland Road intersection, which will have traffic signals.
