New poll: Abbott maintains lead over O’Rourke in Texas governor race

Since May, Abbott has been leading by the same amount in the poll from the University of Texas-Tyler and Dallas Morning News. In the latest poll, 85% of Republicans say they’d vote for Abbott in the race, while 81% of Democrats say they support O’Rourke.

The poll also showed how 49% of Texas voters “disapprove” or “strongly disapprove” of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, while about 42% “approve” or “strongly approve” of the decision. The majority of the Texans in the poll (52%) favor raising the gun legal age to buy a semi-automatic assault rifle from 18 to 21 years old.

On July 13, the Hobby School of Public Affairs at the University of Houston released a poll that showed how O’Rourke was only trailing Abbott by five points (49-44%). The survey was fielded between June 27 and July 7 with 1,169 registered voters in Texas.

CBS also pushed its poll showings in July, releasing how Abbott led O’Rourke 49-41%.

In a recent interview with Lone Star Politics, O’Rourke revealed his thoughts on the latest poll numbers. He told the Dallas Morning News show, “There were more than 7 million Texans, including hundreds of thousands throughout North Texas, who didn’t vote in 2020.”

“In other words, 7 million that we have yet to hear from, whose votes have yet to be counted,” he said. “I don’t think they’re reflected in these polls.”
