More cases of ‘zombie deer disease’ confirmed by Texas Parks & Wildlife Department

Chronic Wasting Disease, a neurodegenerative disorder, has once again been found in Texas deer.

As part of the emergency order, animals in the breeding facilities will be secured and enhanced testing measures put in place.

The condition, which was also found in one deer in Kimble County, about two hours northwest of San Antonio in February, impacts the brain and nervous system of deer, elk, and moose, causing death in the animals.

Infected deer have so far been found in nine counties in total in the Lone Star State.

Symptoms in the breeds include weight loss, stumbling, tremors, abnormal head posture, teeth grinding, and other behavioral differences.

Although the disease is not known to be transmittable to humans, TPWD advised all Texas hunters to test their deer just in case after news of the first case earlier this year.
