The family of the missing San Antonio grandmother who vanished in 2016 announced that her remains had been found over six years later. Family members posted in a Facebook post on Saturday, January 28 that human remains were determined to be Maria Jesus Llamas.

Llamas, 69, went missing on November 20, 2016. She was last seen at the Poteet Flea Market shopping with her husband where she, at some point, wandered off, the family said. Llamas, who had Alzheimer’s when she disappeared, was seen walking through the market on surveillance videos.

According to the family’s Facebook post, dove hunters located a human skull on private land between the Poteet Flea Market and the area where Llamas’ purse was found back in December 2016. On Saturday, police contacted the family and confirmed that the remains found belonged to Llamas.

“We are extremely grateful for everyone’s support the last 6 years,” the family wrote on Facebook. “Today we received news the skull was a match to our mom. We are completely heartbroken as this gives us some closure but leaves us with many more questions.”

In the post, the family added how the last six years has been “extremely hard” for them. The family said they are grateful for the volunteers who spent months walking the fields and rivers alongside them. The family also thanked the San Antonio Police Department Missing Persons Unit and the San Antonio and South Texas community at large.

“There were many complete strangers who have become close family friends,” the post stated. “…As our family has done these last six years, we will continue to give back and assist those in need and most certainly in searching for those who go missing. We are also committed to assist on causes and efforts associated with Alzheimer’s disease.”

A memorial service will be scheduled and announced at a later date.
