Mikel Arteta has warned Graham Potter not to let abuse and bad results ‘destroy his life’ as the Chelsea boss fights to turn around their dismal season.

Potter cited Arteta last week as an example of how keeping faith with a manager despite early struggles can pay dividends.

There were calls for the Arsenal coach to go as recently as last season, when they sat bottom of the table after losing their opening three matches. They can moved five points clear at the top with victory over Everton on Wednesday.

Potter has won only two of his last 12 matches in charge, leaving them 26 points off leaders Arsenal and prompting death threats towards his family.

‘You can have difficulties in your job and challenges, which we do, especially when you lose, but when you are winning as well because this job is so demanding,’ Arteta added.

‘But you cannot destroy your life because of that. And your family, your friends, your loved ones, the people around you, doesn’t deserve to have their lives affected in such a negative way because you don’t win a football match.

‘So that balance I think in my case was critical, but you need some help, someone to paint that picture in front of you because sometimes when you are in that position it is not easy to see.’

When asked if he had sympathy for the Chelsea manager, Arteta said: ‘Absolutely, we are colleagues and we all know the pressure, the demands and the uncertainty that this industry has.

‘The fact is the ball has to go into the net and there are many factors that prevent that, that you cannot control so of course you empathise because you suffer and you know how it is when he is going through those moments.’

Arteta refused to be drawn on whether he had faced death threats, too, adding: ‘I prefer not to talk about that.’

Meanwhile, Arteta has played down the apparent spat between Gabriel and William Saliba at the end of Arsenal’s victory over Leicester on Saturday.

The centre back pairing appeared to clash at full-time but Arteta joked: ‘They are happy marriage. They love playing with each other but they are really demanding of each other and everything is fine.’

He added: ‘I don’t want robots, I want players with feeling with passion that they demand each other, but at the end they have that chemistry and those two certainly they have that chemistry on and off the field and I love that even when we’re winning they want us to do better.’
