Mike McCarthy believes Dak Prescott will be medically cleared to practice this week

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy believes starting quarterback Dak Prescott will be medically cleared to practice this week, which means he’s could start against the Lions this Sunday.

“The anticipation is for Dak to be cleared today or tomorrow, and then he’ll return to practice on Wednesday,” McCarthy said in a Monday news conference.

Prescott suffered a fractured right thumb in Week 1 forcing him to miss five games. Last week marked a significant step, because it was the first time he threw to his receivers in practice since the injury.

Prescott feels like he’s regained power in his throws and is confident he can return.

After a 26-17 loss to the Eagles, Prescott stated “that it’s my plan,” per ESPN’s Ed Werder.

McCarthy didn’t confirm if he will play. However, if Prescott has no setbacks and practices all week, then he will probably start.

Coming back at full strength will help the 4-2 Cowboys keep their playoff hopes alive.

Although backup quarterback Cooper Rush won four games, the offense needs more big plays. They’re averaging 300.8 yards per game, which is below the league average.

Prescott can make some of these plays because he has a strong arm and can play off script scrambling around keeping plays alive. His teammates believe this will provide the spark the offense needs.

“The sky is the limit,” said wideout CeeDee Lamb recently, via ESPN’s Todd Archer. “When we get him back, we’re going to show everybody.”
