San Antonians will have a chance to properly pay their respects to Daunte Wright Sr., the 20-year-old Black man killed by police in Minnesota last weekend.

Digna Candelario, a San Antonio resident and mother of one, announced plans to host a peaceful gathering at Travis Park for Wright, who was shot and killed by former officer Kim Potter during a traffic stop. The event, which Candelario said will be a joint rally and memorial, will also be a chance for locals to mourn Marvin Scott, a Black man who died in police custody last month.

Candelario said the event is a way to remember all Black men and women who have “lost their lives at the hands of injustice.”

“San Antonio should not stand for these kinds of actions,” Candelario told MySA.com. “Our community should not be okay with what is going on in the world, and many of us are not.”

Candelario said the event will not involve a walk or march, but instead take place entirely at Travis Park from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 17. A moment of silence is planned for 11:11 a.m. since Wright was killed on April 11.

Candelario also encourages San Antonians to show up to the event with signs and T-shirts with supportive messages, but especially with positive energy. She said she is happy to talk to other locals at the event to inform them about Black Lives Matter issues.

Additionally, Candelario said she will have information for the GoFundMe fundraiser and related petitions for Wright. She said she will also have sanitation products, PPE, water bottles, and snacks for the event, though donations are welcome.
