Mason Mount endured a moment to forget in Manchester United‘s pre-season friendly against Lens on Saturday.

With the return of the Premier League fast approaching, Mount made his first appearance at Old Trafford since joining United from Chelsea this summer.

In their penultimate pre-season fixture of the summer, United faced Ligue 1 side Lens with Mount still searching for his first goal for the club.

The home support were in good spirits as United confirmed the arrival of 20-year-old striker Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta in a £72 deal.

Just 15 minutes in the England international would be handed a golden opportunity put United ahead as Marcus Rashford delivered a stunning long ball to Alejandro Garnacho that caught former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Brice Samba hopelessly out of position in the Lens goal.

Garnacho duly squared the ball to mount inside the 6-yard box but the summer signing was unable to connect with his strike, with the ball instead recoiling off his standing leg.

The friendly would only get worse in the first half for Erik ten Hag’s side, with fellow new arrival Andre Onana caught off his line as Florian Sotoca gave the visitors the lead.

In the wake of Mount’s miss, United fans took to social media, with many questioning why Ten Hag was so determined to sign the 24-year-old who he first scouted after impressing him while on loan at Vitesse.

One fan wrote: ‘What I’ve learnt from MU pre-season: 1. We overpaid for Mount. Presses well, but the final third leaves a lot be desired. Not convinced on this signing, but will be happy to be proven wrong.’

Another questioned the United manager’s decision: ‘Why exactly did Ten Hag and Man United sign Mount?’

A third fan criticised both Mount and fellow Ten Hag signing Antony: ‘They are playing absolutely rubbish. Better not to get my hopes up. Antony and Mount, what are they doing?’

Another wrote: ‘This Mount signing is for what exactly??? This midfield is very loose. Anthony is not a top baller. Rashford can’t still play CF to save his life’

A further fan wrote: ‘I know I keep saying it. But giving Mount the number 7 shirt is on par with paying £80 million for Maguire’

Despite their disappointing first-half performance, United rebounded following the interval.

Marcus Rashford levelled the game on 48 minutes before Antony recovered from his disappointing performance before the break to put the hosts in front.

Rashford then turned creator, providing the assist as Casemiro netted on 59 minutes to double United’s advantage and secure their come-from-behind victory.
