Marcus Rashford has withdrawn from England’s Euro 2024 qualifiers with Italy and Ukraine, in a major blow to manager Gareth Southgate.

The in-form Manchester United forward suffered a knock during his team’s 3-1 win over Fulham in Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final.

Neither United nor the FA confirmed specifics of the injury or the severity of it on Monday, but sources insist the problem is genuine and serious enough to prevent his selection.

Rashford returned from the World Cup as one of England’s stars of the tournament, scoring three goals.

He was in line to start against Italy and Ukraine given his blistering form at club level, with Raheem Sterling unavailable due to a hamstring injury.

But Southgate will have to make do without the 25-year-old — who has scored 30 goals this season — for the start of England’s qualifying campaign.

His omission will open the door to Manchester City forwards Phil Foden or Jack Grealish being given roles in the games.

Mason Mount has also pulled out as he continues to recover from injury.

Chelsea boss Graham Potter last week spoke of his surprise at Mount’s selection given his ongoing injury problems.

The midfielder has not played since February 26 due to a pelvic complaint. Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope has also withdrawn with a minor injury and has been replaced by Tottenham’s Fraser Forster. Forster’s last England cap came against Australia in May 2016.

Southgate is not planning on naming replacements for Rashford or Mount, despite the emergence of Solly March and Morgan Gibbs-White.
