Manchester City up-and-comer Alex Robertson has turned heads after he declared winning a World Cup with Australia is on his football bucket list.

The midfielder, 19, made the remarkable claim after making his Socceroos debut against Ecuador on Friday night at Commbank Stadium in Sydney

Robertson represented England’s under-16s, 17s and 19s – and also could have played for Scotland, given he was born in Dundee.

Additionally, his Peruvian mother opened the door for him to represent the South American nation – but after growing up in Sydney, the in-demand teen was always leaning towards Australia.

When thrown into the fray by coach Graham Arnold, Robertson didn’t look out of place in the heart of midfield, and played a part in Australia’s final goal in the 3-1 victory in front of 20,668 fans.

‘You’ve obviously got to reach for the stars and win a World Cup,’ Robertson said.

‘You never know what can happen, you saw what the Socceroos did at the last one [in Qatar].

‘For the next few years, building up to the next one, I think we can do some really big things in the future, why not say it?

‘Let’s try and win the World Cup.’

With father Mark and grandfather Alex proudly watching on, Robertson became the third generation of his family to win an Australian cap.

He also had to do so while standing up to some heavy scrutiny from a tiring Ecuadorian defence, which saw Aussie Premier League star Harry Souttar get involved when the youngster clashed with the opposition.

‘He gets right amongst it, which is great and that’s part of our DNA,’ striker Mitchell Duke said.

Robertson isn’t cap-tied to Australia yet – but he has clearly bought into the togetherness of the Socceroos’ squad.

‘Australia has been my home since I was young, so there’s only really one answer,’ he said when quizzed on his international allegiance.

‘I feel like looking from the outside you can see that togetherness at the World Cup as well.

‘But coming into it, it’s kind of like you just have to have to buy into what’s a really good team.

‘Everyone’s together and the chemistry is really good.’

Robertson is yet to make a senior appearance for Pep Guardiola’s team – but it is believed he is inching closer to his first minutes with the Premier League heavyweights.

Australia face Ecuador in the second friendly at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on Tuesday night.
