Manchester City midfielder Matt Smith gets green light to secure loan move before domestic deadline

Manchester City are ready to send midfielder Matt Smith out on loan before Friday’s transfer deadline, with a number of Championship and League One clubs chasing his signature.

Smith, who started for Wales in their recent Nations League clashes against Republic of Ireland and Bulgaria, is keen to go out on loan in search of regular first-team football with his opportunities set to be limited in Pep Guardiola‘s star-studded City side.

The 20-year-old has had three spells out on loan during the last couple of seasons with stints in Holland with FC Twente and in the Championship with Queens Park Rangers and Charlton Athletic last term.

Smith is seeking regular first-team football this season as he wants to safeguard his spot in Ryan Giggs’ Wales squad ahead of next summer’s European Championship finals.

Several Championship and top-end League One sides have made enquiries to City about Smith’s availability as they look to add the talented midfielder to their squads before Friday’s domestic transfer window closes.

Smith has yet to make his first-team debut for City, but he is highly-regarded within the corridors of power at the Etihad Stadium.
