A man was pulled from his upside-down vehicle after reportedly driving off a Guadalupe River bridge on Monday, May 30, authorities told the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung. The 22-year-old man drove off at River Road’s second crossing just after midnight on Memorial Day

Robert Mikel, Canyon Lake Fire and EMS chief, told the publication that his crew responded to the scene where the vehicle and its sole occupant drove off the bridge and settled upside down in the Guadalupe River, which is about 42 miles northeast of San Antonio. According to authorities, bystanders pulled the driver out of the submerged vehicle before emergency crews arrived.

Mikel said the 22-year-old man was transported to Christus-New Braunfels Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. It was not revealed at this time where the driver was from. No other details were released about the incident.

The Guadalupe River runs from Kerr County to San Antonio Bay, with an average temperature of 17.75 degrees Celsius. The river is a popular destination for rafting, fly fishing, and canoeing.

On May 14, a 28-year-old man drowned in the Guadalupe River, according to the New Braunfels Police Department. First responders arrived to find the man, who is from Mexico, had been swimming in the river in the area of Gruene River Bridge. Police say he went under the water and did not initially resurface.

Paramedics were able to locate the man and pulled him from the water after being under for about 20 minutes. They performed life-saving measures on him but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
