Main lanes of Loop 1604 now reopen after major bridge crash

Update: 5:50 p.m. Thursday, December 29: Eastbound lanes of Loop 1604 are now open to the public, while Southbound lanes near Gold Canyon Road continue to remain closed, according to the SAPD and TXDOT San Antonio.

A collision that involved a commercial motor vehicle hitting a bridge has caused road closures on San Antonio’s Loop 1604 in the afternoon of Thursday, December 29, according to police. The San Antonio Police Department said the eastbound main lanes of N. Loop 1604 E. under Gold Canyon Road won’t be opened up for a few hours.

The incident occurred just after 11:44 a.m. on Loop 1604 and Gold Canyon Road, on the city’s Northside near Highway 281. SAPD said the commercial motor vehicle was hauling construction equipment with a boom extended over height. It collided with Gold Canyon Bridge over N. Loop 1604.

The construction equipment damaged two support beams under the bridge and caused a hole in the asphalt on the bridge, according to SAPD. TxDOT engineers arrived to inspect the damage. TxDOT is making temporary repairs to the Gold Canyon bridge as of 3:48 p.m.

The Eastbound main lanes on N. Loop 1604 E. will open in a few hours. However, Southbound Gold Canyon over Loop 1604 will remain closed until further notice from TxDOT.

SAPD is asking drives to use an alternate route if possible.
