Liverpool have complained to the Premier League after their ticket allocation for their upcoming match at Manchester City was slashed.

Earlier this month Sportsmail revealed that, following a number of instances of disorder at recent games between the two sides, City had been told by safety bosses to cut the visitors’ following by 20 per cent.

As a result, in the latest development in an increasingly toxic rivalry, Jurgen Klopp‘s side has been given 2,400 seats for the Premier League fixture, rather than the 3,000 most away clubs would receive.

That move appears to have not gone down well at Anfield, ahead of the April 1 clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool have confirmed that its allocation has been ‘significantly reduced’ with the reduction ‘agreed between Greater Manchester Police, the local Ground Safety Advisory Group and Manchester City’. It added: ‘LFC has been in contact with the Premier League and Manchester City to challenge this decision. The club is committed to having as many supporters as possible in stadiums for Premier League away fixtures.’

The Premier League has been contacted for comment.

While City declined to comment, it is understood that officials felt they were left with little option and had to act on advice. The move has also come at a cost, with 600 tickets not on sale.

At December’s Carabao Cup tie between the two at the Etihad a 15-year-old female City fan was struck by a pot weighted with coins that had been thrown from the visitors’ area. The teenager was left scarred for life.

A harrowing picture of the girl’s bloodstained blue-and-white scarf later emerged on social media. That was the latest in a number of incidents at games between the two clubs amid a growing hostility.

Last month, Sportsmail revealed how City were considering introducing netting to surround away areas at the Etihad on a ‘case-by-case basis’.

Ahead of the Carabao Cup match both clubs appealed for calm but it later emerged that more than 50 reports of missiles being launched from the away end were made.

A 53-year-old, believed to be a City fan, was hospitalised after being assaulted outside the ground while disabled Liverpool fans were racially abused with a man arrested.
