Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp to miss Southampton clash after he is handed one-match touchline ban

Jurgen Klopp is BANNED from the touchline for Liverpool’s clash with Southampton as the FA win their appeal over lenient £30,000 fine that the German received after his furious rant at an official during their win over Man City

  • Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been handed a one-match touchline ban
  • He was initially fined £30,000 over his conduct in the game against Man City
  • The FA felt that was too lenient and an appeal board has suspended the German
  • It means he will miss Liverpool’s final game before the World Cup this weekend

Jurgen Klopp will serve a one-match touchline ban on Saturday after the FA successfully appealed against his original punishment for being sent off against Manchester City.

Liverpool’s manager received a red card in the 86th minute of his side’s 1-0 win for demonstrative behaviour towards assistant referee Gary Beswick on October 16.

He was charged and then an independent regulatory committee deemed he should be fined £30,000. But the FA were adamant that was too lenient and pushed for Klopp to be hit with a further sanction.

They have now got the outcome they wanted.

Klopp has maintained throughout that he never used foul or abusive language to Beswick and it was down to the fact he confronted him — following the failure to award a free kick to Mohamed Salah — from such close proximity that cost him.

‘It was the most expensive face I have ever made,’ he said last month.

Klopp believes a win would enable his team to ‘see light at the end of the tunnel’ following a difficult start to the campaign.

It has been a remarkable week for Liverpool after Monday’s news that owners Fenway Sports Group are prepared to sell the club after 12 years.

Klopp reiterated nothing would affect his commitment to the job, but believes fresh investment would enable the club to be more aggressive in their transfer strategy and remain Manchester City’s nearest challengers.

The German said: ‘How we did it so far brought us where we are. Fine. But fresh money is no mistake. Nothing gets cheaper. Sometimes you have to spend. I have no idea what will happen but I am positive.

‘If in the end it is not positive, I can start worrying, but I just think everything will be fine.’
