Leicester wrap up £22m signing of Timothy Castagne from Atalanta on a five-year deal

Leicester have completed the signing of defender Timothy Castagne from Atalanta in a deal worth £22million.

The 24-year-old, who has traditionally played as a right back but can also operate from the left, has penned a five-year deal with the Foxes.

A Belgian international with seven caps, Castagne has been brought in by Brendan Rodgers following the sale of Ben Chilwell to Chelsea last week for £50m.

Tottenham had also been keen on Castagne, who had one year left on contract at the Serie A club, but talks accelerated over the weekend with Leicester and now the Foxes have got their man.

Castagne is currently on international duty with Belgium ahead of their UEFA Nations League games against Denmark and Iceland.

He joined Atalanta from Genk three years ago and has since been part of a side which has been one of European football’s surprise packages.

The defender played 35 times last season as Atalanta finished third in Serie A and reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where they lost late on to eventual finalists PSG.

Castagne made his international debut against Scotland two years ago and he scored his first goal for his country against Kazakhstan last June.

The Belgian also played alongside current Foxes midfielder Wilfried Ndidi at Genk, before the Nigerian moved to the King Power in January 2017.

But he has now reunited with the midfielder, and is also familiar with Leicester first-team players Youri Tielemans and Dennis Praet from the national team set-up,
