Leicester fans ask why Jamie Vardy didn’t take penalty vs Everton as James Maddison’s shot is saved

James Maddison missed a penalty during Leicester’s 2-2 draw against Evertonon Monday night, with many fans taking to Twitter to question why Jamie Vardy did not take the spot-kick instead.

With both sides in danger of relegation, they threw the kitchen sink at each other throught what was an enthralling game of football at the King Power Stadium, with the Toffees taking the lead inside 15 minutes with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring from the spot.   

Caglar Soyuncu would level the scores just seven minutes later, poking home a lose ball inside the Everton penalty area, before Vardy took advantage of a loose pass from Alex Iwobi, striding past Jordan Pickford and found the back of the net to make  it 2-1. 

Leicester were then given a chance to extend their lead before half time, as Micheal Keane handled the ball inside the box, with referee Micheal Oliver subsequently pointing to the spot. 

Maddison step up to take the penalty, but was made to wait a long time to take the spot-kick, subsequently striking a poor effort right down the throat of Pickford, who parried the attempt away from goal.

Fans online asked why Jamie Vardy did not take the spot-kick considering his scoring form

It was a huge moment in this enthralling relegation dog-fight, which could have given Dean Smith’s side some breathing space heading into the second half.

But fans took to Twitter to criticise the decision to give the Leicester midfielder the penalty over their striker, Vardy, who is currently in scoring form, netting twice in two games for the club, with one even calling the decision as ‘scandalous.’

‘Vardy should have been on that pen. Scandalous,’ one said, while another added: ‘Why’s Vardy not taking that pen.’

One user wrote: ‘Vardy and Youri Tielemans in your team and you give the pen to Maddison???’

‘Terrible pen. Straight down the middle with minimal pace. Should have always been Tielemans or Vardy,’ said another.

Maddison has been a key player for Leicester in midfield this season, scoring nine times in 25 league appearances while also amassing seven assists.

Despite the penalty, both teams played out an enthralling 2-2 draw during the match

But it was a weak attempt and it seemed Everton goalkeeper, Pickford, was well prepared for the strike, with a photo appearing online of his water bottle showing that the Leicester midfielder was likely to hit the ball down the middle. 

Alex Iwobi rescued an equaliser back for the Blues deep in the second half, but both goalkeepers, Pickford and Daniel Iversen, were the stars of the show, keeping out several threatening attempts to see both sides halve the points. 

The result means Leicester stay clear of the relegation zone, but are level on points with both Leeds in 17th place and Nottingham Forest in 18th. 

Everton meanwhile make up some ground on Forest, trailing Steve Cooper’s side by a point, with the Toffees set to take on Brighton at the Amex Stadium next week.
