Leicester City defender Soyuncu set to reject Manchester City and commit future to Foxes

Leicester City centre-back Caglar Soyuncu has revealed he wants to commit his future to the club and isn’t interested in a summer move to Manchester City

The 23-year-old has excelled alongside Jonny Evans at the heart of Leicester’s back four after emerging as Harry Maguire’s replacement.

Maguire moved to Manchester United in an £80m deal last summer but the Foxes opted not to sign a replacement and put their faith in Soyuncu.

The Turkey international has repaid the faith shown in him by Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers with a stunning season, prompting rumours he could move on this summer.

But Soyuncu insists he isn’t going anywhere and says Rodgers’ decision to play him consistently has given him a massive boost in confidence.

He said to Fotomac: ‘I don’t think it would be right to go somewhere right now. I’m having a good season. Above all, I still have a lot to learn.

‘He [Maguire] is the most expensive defender in the world and your team does not buy another because it trusts you,’ Soyuncu said. ‘You play instead of someone who transferred for 80 million pounds.

‘We’re going well now, but the important thing is to keep it going. I played 30 matches, but it’s important to increase this to three-digit numbers. It is very important to be at the same level throughout your career.’

When asked about the secret to his success at Leicester so far, Soyuncu revealed his detailed preparation has helped him to adapt to first team football quickly.

‘After the games we played well, I was preparing myself as if I was preparing for my first game in the first training. I think this has had an effect. We still have the ambition to win. I think this is very important for young players.’

Soyuncu joined Leicester from Freiburg in the summer of 2018 but found games hard to come by under Rodgers’ predecessor, Claude Puel.

But the arrival of Rodgers in February 2019 changed the course of the defender’s time at the club and he has gone on to make 28 Premier League appearances this season.
