Brendan Rodgers expects Leicester’s clash with Tottenham on Thursday to go-ahead despite Covid-19 outbreaks at both clubs.

The Foxes were without seven players, some due to coronavirus, for the 3-2 defeat at Napoli last Thursday and midfielder Hamza Choudhury was then declared unavailable for Sunday’s 4-0 win over Newcastle.

Of the seven who missed those games, Rodgers believes only Daniel Amartey has a chance of facing Spurs.

But that fixture remains in doubt after a large number of Covid cases meant Spurs were unable to face Rennes in the Conference League on Thursday or Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday.

‘I can’t give the number of Covid cases,’ said Rodgers. ‘It’s medical and something I don’t need to declare to you but we have a host of players out, a mixture of Covid and of course players that aren’t well, so that’s as much as I can say.

‘I’ve not heard anything that the Spurs game is not on, and obviously with the European decision as well, with Tottenham not being able to play (UEFA have said their meeting with Rennes will not be rescheduled), I suspect the game would go ahead. We haven’t been told anything otherwise.’

Leicester are negotiating a ferocious period of fixtures that sees them play nine times in December, with little opportunity for rest or recovery.

Rodgers added: ‘We have been taking all the precautions – wearing masks, reinforcing hygiene issues, safe distancing. It’s just really unfortunate we’ve seen a number of cases and I’m sure we’ll continue to see that over this winter period.

‘We are lucky we have a training ground that allows us to work safely and hopefully we can get some of these players back and maybe not have so many more cases in future.’
