Leeds beat Norwich to ease Premier League relegation fears with Raphinha and Rodrigo on target

Leeds claimed just their second Premier League win of the season to climb out of the bottom three.

Dumped in the drop zone following Burnley’s win over Brentford, Leeds got themselves straight back out by edging out Norwich, to heap more misery on Daniel Farke’s side who remain bottom and winless after 10 games.

All the goals came in a four-minute flurry of second half activity which began with a brilliant opener from Raphinha and ended with Rodrigo firing in the winner.

In between Andrew Omobamidele headed Norwich level briefly but their afternoon ended in familiar fashion.

They have lost eight of their league games so far this season and despite the clear improvement – in fairness, it would have been hard not to improve on their 7-0 defeat at Chelsea – they still came up short against Leeds.

The first half was at times fast and frantic, perhaps a reflection of both sides’ need for a result.

Having shipped seven at Stamford Bridge, though, the last thing Norwich needed was to go behind early on.

After Ozan Kabak whipped the ball off Raphinha’s toes just in time, they almost did.

Daniel James’s speed saw him beat Tim Krul to Stuart Dallas’ through ball. He went around the Norwich keeper and with the angle reducing fired the ball goalwards.

It was heading in until captain Grant Hanley got back to boot the ball off the line.

As the lively opening continued Teemu Pukki whipped an effort wide for Norwich.

Leeds continued to look dangerous whenever they ventured forward for the remainder of the half while Mathias Normann was a standout at the heart of midfield for Norwich, dashing around putting out fires.

But there was an audible sense of dread and unease was audible inside Carrow Road whenever they played the ball backwards or held onto possession in their own half.

Get the ball forward and away from our goal seemed to be the sentiment.

And the reason for the home supporters concern was evident when Kenny McLean misplaced pass went back towards Raphinha rather than a teammate.

Raphinha played through James whose pace again took him clear but this time Krul was off his line quickly enough to deal with the danger.

The half ended with Norwich going the closest to breaking the deadlock, Milot Rashica and Normann both giving Illan Meslier in the Leeds goal reason to be concerned.

McLean signalled Norwich’s intent after half time by catching Meslier late as he attempted to charge down the keeper’s clearance. Pukki was putting himself about in similar fashion and Rashica’s free-kick forced Meslier into a save down low to his right.

The young keeper was all of a sudden a central figure. From his patient distribution and throw out Leeds eventually edged in front. Pascal Struijk and James were involved as Leeds worked the ball from back to front and left to right.

James’s pass found Raphinha and he cut inside, tip-toeing past a string of backtracking defenders and found the bottom corner, his shot taking a deflection as it flew through Kabak’s legs.

Leeds were ahead for just two minutes. Meslier was involved in a mix-up that gifted Norwich a corner and, from it, Andrew Omobamidele headed in his first ever career goal.

But they were then level for just two minutes. Kabak was dispossessed by Struijk, fit-again Kalvin Phillips slipped the ball to Rodrigo who beat Tim Krul with an effort that dipped under the Dutchman’s arm. Despite the movement on the shot Krul’s disappointed reaction told its own story.
