Kyle approves involvement in 100-mile trail linking San Antonio to Austin

Last week, Kyle City Council approved a citywide trail system that will a part of the Great Springs Project. The plan aims to connect San Antonio to Austin through New Braunfels, San Marcos, Kyle, and Buda.

According to city documents, the trail has been tentatively named The Vybe Kyle. It will feature “Vybes” shopping, dining, relaxation, and park amenities. Developments along the Vybe are encouraged to face the trail to attract foot traffic.

City documents stated it may also include signage, raised speed tables, art installations, gardens, benches, security cameras, swings, ponds, and fitness stations. Part of the trail will be 12 feet wide to accommodate golf carts and light poles.

Officials propose 51.3 miles of paved trails with 12.1 miles of sidewalk connectors already in place and 9.2 miles of nature trails. An estimated budget for personnel, equipment, and concrete is $500,000 per year, the document stated.

City officials noted they’ve obtained state funding for the trail through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The City of Kyle also approved a $2 million bond for trail construction. The city has also requested an additional $2 million from Hays County.

It is unclear when construction will begin, but the council will be discussing the details at upcoming meetings.

The Great Springs Project has a goal to have the 100-mile trail system in place by 2036. The green corridor will be connected by a network of waterways all linked to the Edward’s Aquifer, including Barton, San Marcos, Comal, and San Antonio springs.
