Josh McDaniels: Derek Carr knows Raiders are ‘his’ despite Colin Kaepernick workout

The quarterback linked with the Las Vegas Raiders on the minds of most this week isn’t starter Derek Carr, who signed a three-year, $121.5M extension back in April. Instead, many media members speaking with Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels on Thursday wanted to talk only about Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick last played during the 2016 season, when he silently and peacefully protested racial inequality and police violence during playings of the national anthem ahead of games, but the 34-year-old recently had a workout with the Raiders that reportedly went well. While McDaniels understandably elected against commenting on Kaepernick’s session, the coach made it clear Carr’s job isn’t in jeopardy ahead of the summer months.

“Nah, I mean, I think Derek’s pretty comfortable with where he’s at,” McDaniels remarked, according to Brady Henderson of ESPN. “I think he knows who he is for us and I know he knows how I feel about him, how we feel about him. I don’t think that’s really a big thing to Derek at this point.”

As things stand, unproven commodities Jarrett Stidham and Nick Mullens are on track to compete for the right to be Carr’s backup later this year. It’s unknown where Kaepernick would land on the depth chart if he signed, but McDaniels seemed eager to make sure nobody had any misunderstandings about the roster’s QB1 slot.

“I think he knows this is his football team and he’s working like it on the field and he’s leading the way that we want him to lead and he’s doing all the right things,” McDaniels added about Carr. “I couldn’t ask more from Derek Carr and very pleased with what he’s doing so far.”

McDaniels did not indicate if the Raiders will offer Kaepernick a contract.
